Psychotherapist

Maria Jewell

“Therapy is not about perfection; it is about cultivating your own confidence to trust your own decisions.”

Maria is a psychotherapist, qualified grief and loss counsellor and trauma-informed practitioner, who works with adults navigating a range of difficulties, including professional pressures, relationship problems, life transitions, family estrangement, bereavement and loss or a general sense of feeling stuck, experiences that often overlap.

Having worked in the corporate world and in a range of charitable, community and therapeutic settings, Maria’s background has given her in-depth experience in working with a wide range of clients, both from a professional and personal perspective, from senior executives and business leaders, to staff involved in the education sectors and creative industries, as well as with elderly and individuals with complex needs.

The core of her approach is psychodynamic thinking, influenced by CBT and solution focussed therapy. The relationships and experiences we had growing up often shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others and what we believe is possible for us as adults. Understanding these patterns can be hugely helpful, but it does not mean being defined or limited by them. Through bringing her expertise, genuine warmth and careful honest reflections, Maria supports her clients to explore different aspects of themselves, discover greater insight and choice.

Maria also works with an understanding that behaviours often serve a purpose we do not immediately recognise. What looks like anxiety, addiction or self-destructive patterns may actually be ways of coping, managing trauma, regulating an overwhelmed nervous system or navigating neurodivergence. Rather than labelling these responses as problems, she explores what they mean and what her clients genuinely need to find a more sustainable way forward.

As an integrative therapist, Maria draws from a range of therapeutic approaches depending on what clients need, staying informed by current research in neurobiology, attachment and trauma. As a former lawyer and mother of three teenagers, she also brings lived experience of managing complexity, stress and competing responsibilities.
